The 2019 Tony Awards will air on Sunday, June 9 at 8 p.m. (EDT), so don’t expect me to answer my phone after 8 p.m. because I’ll be watching!  I love the award show season, but the Tony’s hold a special place in my thespian heart. This year is sure to be another great show especially since my man James Cordon is hosting.  Seriously, who doesn’t love James?!

Hosting a viewing party doesn’t have to be huge and over the top, unless you’re like me and that’s just how I roll.  Anyway, here are a few tips on hosting your own award winning viewing party!

1. Invite The Guests

This can be as simple as a text, phone call or Facebook invite.  If you’ve planned ahead and want to make this an annual tradition then send out a snail mail invitation and take the time to design it and make it a keepsake. I’ve created a board on Pinterest with invitation ideas. Check it out here. I also encourage my guests to dress up!  They can either dress formal or as their favorite character from a production.

2. Set the Stage

Roll our the red carpet for your guests! You can rent a red carpet or get a red runner or plastic table cloth from the dollar store.  You can go to Party City and they usually have a Broadway or theatre themed set of decorations for relatively cheap.  Have a DIY photobooth with a along the red carpet where people can strike a pose and commemorate the evening.

3. Eats & Drinks

Let’s be honest, half the fun of going to a party is the food.  Go all out with themed appetizers and small finger foods. Its a long night so don’t serve a heavy meal or your guests will feel sluggish half way through the show. People tend to congregate in the kitchen or where ever the food is, so make sure its within earshot of the TV so you can still hear what is going on. You can either get prepackaged snacks from the store (BORING), or create a curated menu with a Broadway theme.  Some simple and easy appetizers would be a popcorn bar with different toppings, “Ham”ilton sliders, “Chicago” style hot dogs, Red Carpet Ropes (Twizzlers), and “Once on this Island” fruit tray.  You’ll want to make sure you have something to wash the goodies down with. How about “Aint to Proud” punch, “Kill a Mockingbird” martini, or “Hadestown” tonic.

4. Fun & Games

The Tony Awards website has made this super simple! They have a printable party pack of goodies like bingo, wine tags, name tags, and a printable ballot!  Its always more fun if there are prizes for the winners of the games too. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but a small gift card or even their own Tony award to take home!

5. Watch

Be sure you have enough comfortable seating for everyone and that the TV is at a good angle so your guests aren’t having to strain to see the show. If possible allow an area for people to stand in case they get tired of sitting, but make sure it does’t obstruct the view of other guests.  Otherwise, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show on CBS!
